BEWARE THE TOBOR

CIVIL DEFENSE AUXILIARY · FORM 1957-T

BEWARE
THE TOBOR

An official warning of the robot menace, issued without irony by persons who have seen the humming in the alley and the hat that tips itself. This is not a picture show. This is a bulletin.

A rusted giant robot with glowing red eyes looms over a 1950s small town at night, hazard stripes in the sky, a police cruiser in the street, and a screaming couple in the corner.
EXHIBIT A — UNIT U-47, LAST TUESDAY

CONFIRMED INCURSIONS

The sightings log

Carbon copies filed in triplicate. Names withheld to protect the nervous. The tobor already knows who they are.

LOG 47-A

Miller's Dairy — 11:42 P.M.

The milk bottles stacked themselves. The tobor tipped its hat. Mrs. Miller reports it asked, politely, for skim. Civil Defense does not consider this polite.

LOG 47-B

Town Square Clock

All four faces now count in binary. The mayor calls it progress. The pigeons have filed a complaint. We are taking the pigeons seriously.

LOG 47-C

Maple St. windowsill

The cooling pie is gone. A punched card was left in its place. Translation pending. Smell of ozone and nutmeg. Do not eat the card.

The same giant tobor over the darkened town, hazard-striped sky, townsfolk running past a water tower and diner as a searchlight cuts the street.
STILL FROM REEL 3 — DO NOT APPLAUD

STANDING ORDERS

What to do when it arrives

  1. 01

    Do not offer oil

Hospitality is how they get in. A well-oiled tobor is a confident tobor. Keep the can in the shed.

  2. 02

    Do not teach it checkers

They already know. They are being polite. Decline the rematch. Report any board that moves itself.

  3. 03

    Remain analog

Panic is analog. So is the whistle. Three blasts means the tobor is in the pantry. One blast means it is folding laundry. Both are incidents.

THE TOBOR IS ALREADY HERE.

A civil-defense poster for the machine age, kept on yellow paper in The Robot Lives portfolio. No signup. No siren you can hear from here. Watch the pantry anyway.
